Crochet jar cover - pattern

Crochet jar cover - pattern
Shell jar

You may need to adjust this pattern to what kind of jar and/or yarn you are using. I recommend to crochet a bottom because I think otherwise the surface will heat too much. Also it is good to remember the importance of never leaving a lighted candle in a jar unattended.

I use cotton yarn like Marks Bianca, Mayflower Cotton 8/4 Merceriseret or Løve Garn Bomuld 8/4 Merceriseret, 2.5 mm hook and a jar (mine is 12.3 cm high and 22.5 cm wide).

Abbreviations (US terms):
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch,
sc = single crochet,
dc = double crochet,
tr = treble crochet,
sp = space,
st = stitch,
sk = skip,
rnd = round,
dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together

The bottom:
Make magic ring.
Round 1. ch 3 (counts as dc), 9 dc in ring, join with sl st into 3rd ch. Pull magic circle tight (total 10 dc).
Round 2. ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same st, *2 dc in each st* repeat between * * around, join with sl st into 3rd ch (total 20 dc).
Round 3. ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same st, 1 dc, *2 dc in same st, 1 dc* repeat between * * around, join with sl st into 3rd ch (total 30 dc).
Round 4. ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same st, 2 dc, *2 dc in same st, 2 dc* repeat between * * around, join with sl st into 3rd ch (total 40 dc).

The piece now covers almost the bottom of the jar but if you have a bigger jar you can continue the same way and increase dc between by 1 dc in each round. The next round should then be 2 dc in same st, 3 dc.

The body:
The pattern itself is a multiple of 8. You may have to adjust next row, if you have done more rnds to the bottom, so it fits to the pattern. If you think the piece is too tight and too wide by increasing the number of repetitions then you can add ch 1 both before and after 1 tr. You should put the jar in the cover after rnd 6 or 7 to see if it fits.

Round 5. ch 3 (counts as dc), *1 dc in each st*, repeat between * * around, join with sl st into 3rd ch (total 40 dc).
Round 6. ch 4 (counts as tr), *sk 3 st, (3 tr, ch 1, 3 tr) in next st, sk 3 st, 1 tr in next st* repeat between * * around but omitting last 1 tr in the last repeat, join with sl st into 4th ch.
Round 7. ch 4 (counts as tr), *(3 tr, ch 1, 3 tr) in sp between the tr groups, 1 tr in next tr* repeat between * * around but omitting last 1 tr in the last repeat, join with sl st into 4th ch.

Repeat rnd 7 until the piece reaches the neck of the jar by stretching it up. I think it looks better to have the piece tight around the jar. I did rnd 7 in total 5 times.

You might need to place the jar in the cover before next rnd but otherwise after it. Make sure to weave in the end before you continue.

Round 12. ch 6 (counts as dc and ch 3), *1 sc in sp between tr groups, ch 3, 1 dc in tr, ch 3* repeat between * * around but omitting last 1 dc in tr and ch 3 in the last repeat, join with sl st into 3rd ch.

The neck:
You should try to crochet rather tightly next rnds.

Round 13. *4 sc in next sp, sk sc, 4 sc in next sp, sk dc* repeat between * * around but end with 4 sc into last sp and join with sl st into 1st sc (total 40 sc).

Now it's time to narrow the opening but here you might have to adjust the decreasing, because the jars neck might be very different, or might have to add or skip rnds.

Round 14. ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in each st around but decrease with dc2tog 5 times evenly through out the rnd (total 35 dc).
Round 15. ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in each st (total 35 dc).
Round 16. crab stitch (reverse sc) into each st.
Fasten off and weave in end.

Then you just have to put a tea light in it and enjoy :)

  4. Riktig vakkar! I normally avoid thread crochet & tiny steel hooks, but if I call it "cotton fingering-weight yarn" and use a small aluminum hook (such as the 2.5mm in this pattern), it doesn't seem as scary. (And the Norwegian I learned in university helped with figuring out the remaining bits of Icelandic on this page.) Well-done!

  11. LED candles are perfectly safe and in a jar look exactly like real candles.
